Why Smart People Fall for Propaganda Too

One of the most dangerous assumptions you can make about propaganda is that it only works on other people — people who are less educated, less intelligent, or less sophisticated than you. This assumption is not just wrong; it is itself a form of the pride that propaganda exploits. Research consistently shows that educated, intelligent people are not immune to propaganda. In some cases, they are more vulnerable, because their intelligence gives them more sophisticated tools for rationalizing beliefs they adopted for emotional or social reasons. This lesson examines why intelligence is not a reliable defense against propaganda and what actually is.

This module began with Bernays’s insight that the most effective propaganda works when you don’t recognize it. This capstone completes the circle: the people most confident they can’t be fooled are often the easiest to fool, because their confidence prevents them from deploying the very skepticism that would protect them.

The illusory truth effect persists even when you know about it

Lesson 2 demonstrated that knowing about the illusory truth effect does not eliminate it. This capstone generalizes that insight: knowing about propaganda techniques provides some protection, but it does not provide immunity. The defenses this module teaches are habits of practice, not shields of knowledge.

In Germany in the 1930s, the Nazi party drew substantial support from educated professionals: doctors, lawyers, engineers, professors, and civil servants. The medical profession, one of the most educated groups in German society, had a higher rate of Nazi party membership than any other profession. These were not ignorant people. They were highly trained, analytically sophisticated individuals who adopted and promoted an ideology based on pseudoscientific racism, nationalist mythology, and systematic dehumanization. Intelligence did not protect them. In many cases, it helped them construct more elaborate justifications for beliefs they held for emotional and social reasons.

Modern research explains why this happens. Psychologist Dan Kahan’s work on “identity-protective cognition” shows that people with higher levels of scientific literacy and numeracy are actually more polarized on politically divisive issues, not less. Why? Because they are better at finding evidence that supports their group’s position and better at constructing arguments that dismiss evidence challenging it. Intelligence, in these cases, serves not as a tool for finding truth but as a weapon for defending identity.

This is what psychologist David Perkins calls the “myside bias”: the tendency to use reasoning ability primarily to support conclusions you have already reached rather than to genuinely evaluate them. Smart people are not better at avoiding this bias. They are better at it. They construct more convincing rationalizations, find more sophisticated counterarguments to opposing evidence, and feel more justified in their conclusions because the reasoning process felt rigorous — even though it was pointed in only one direction.

This does not mean education is useless. It means education is insufficient. Knowledge of propaganda techniques, logical fallacies, and cognitive biases provides tools. But tools can be used defensively (to protect yourself from manipulation) or offensively (to rationalize your existing beliefs more effectively). The difference is not intelligence. It is character: the willingness to turn your critical tools on your own beliefs as ruthlessly as you turn them on others’.

The Professor Who Couldn’t See It

Dr. Anand Mehta was a political science professor who taught a course on propaganda at a respected university. He was brilliant. His lectures on Bernays, Goebbels, and Soviet information warfare were genuinely outstanding. His students called him the best professor they’d ever had. He could identify propaganda techniques in historical and contemporary examples with surgical precision.

In 2020, Dr. Mehta became intensely engaged with a particular political movement. He began sharing articles on social media that used many of the techniques he taught in his own classroom: emotional appeals, tribal framing, selective evidence, and repetition of unverified claims. When a colleague pointed this out, Dr. Mehta was genuinely offended. “I’m a propaganda expert,” he said. “I can’t be fooled by propaganda. The things I’m sharing are simply true.”

His colleague, Dr. Keisha Williams, pressed further. She showed him specific posts he had shared that used the exact fear-then-relief pattern he had taught in his lecture on emotional manipulation. She pointed to articles that cited no primary sources — a red flag he would have caught instantly in an exam. She identified tribal framing that he routinely analyzed in historical propaganda.

Dr. Mehta’s response was telling. He did not deny that the techniques were present. Instead, he argued that the techniques didn’t matter because the underlying cause was just. “When you’re fighting for the right side, the tools are secondary to the mission.”

Dr. Williams replied: “That is exactly what Bernays said. That is exactly what Goebbels said. The belief that your cause justifies the techniques is the first step toward becoming what you teach against.”

Dr. Mehta did not change his behavior. He continued to share propaganda that aligned with his beliefs while expertly detecting propaganda that contradicted them. His intelligence and expertise made him better at both detection and rationalization. The same knowledge that should have been his defense had become his weapon — pointed outward at opponents, never inward at himself.

Myside bias
The tendency to evaluate evidence, generate arguments, and test hypotheses in a manner biased toward one’s existing beliefs or the positions of one’s group. Unlike confirmation bias (which is about seeking information), myside bias is about the direction of reasoning: using intelligence to support conclusions already held rather than to genuinely evaluate them.
Motivated reasoning
The unconscious process of arriving at conclusions that one wants to reach, while believing one is reasoning objectively. Motivated reasoning uses the machinery of rational thought — evidence evaluation, logical argument, counterargument — in service of a predetermined conclusion, making the result feel reasoned even when the process was biased from the start.
Sophistication effect
The finding that people with more education and analytical ability are sometimes more vulnerable to partisan bias, because they are better equipped to construct rationalizations for their preferred conclusions. The sophistication effect reveals that intelligence amplifies reasoning ability without determining its direction.
Intellectual self-honesty
The practice of applying the same critical standards to your own beliefs that you apply to others’. Intellectual self-honesty is the primary defense against propaganda, because propaganda works by creating beliefs that feel too important or too righteous to question. The intellectually self-honest person questions them anyway.

Begin with the uncomfortable thesis. State it directly: “Intelligence does not protect you from propaganda. In some cases, it makes you more vulnerable.” Let the room react. Many students will resist this — especially the academically strong ones. Ask: “Why does this claim feel wrong? Is it possible that your resistance to it is itself evidence of the problem?” The belief that smart people are immune to manipulation is a form of the very pride that propaganda exploits.

Present the evidence. Walk through the data on German professionals in the Nazi party. Then present Kahan’s research on polarization and scientific literacy. Then introduce Perkins’s concept of myside bias. Ask: “If more educated people are more polarized, not less, what does that tell you about the relationship between knowledge and wisdom?” Knowledge gives you tools. Wisdom determines which direction you point them.

Analyze Dr. Mehta’s story. Ask: “At what point did Dr. Mehta’s expertise stop being a defense and start being a vulnerability?” The turning point was when he began using his knowledge of propaganda to rationalize rather than evaluate. He could still detect propaganda perfectly — in messages he disagreed with. His analytical tools worked flawlessly — when pointed outward. The failure was in direction, not in capability.

Teach the “reverse the source” test. This is the most powerful practical defense against myside bias. When you encounter an argument or a piece of evidence that supports your position, imagine it came from the other side. If your political opponent made this exact argument using this exact evidence, would you find it convincing? If you would scrutinize it more carefully when it came from the other side, your evaluation is driven by identity, not by evidence. Practice this with a specific example from current events.

Discuss the “just cause” justification. Dr. Mehta argued that propaganda techniques don’t matter when the cause is just. Ask: “Is this ever true? Does a just cause justify manipulative communication techniques?” Push students to consider that every propagandist in history believed their cause was just. The Nazis believed their cause was just. Soviet propagandists believed their cause was just. The “my cause justifies the techniques” argument has no stopping point — it can justify anything.

Close with the capstone commitment. Ask: “After this entire module on propaganda, what is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself?” The answer is not “know the techniques” — Dr. Mehta knew them perfectly. It is this: apply your critical skills to the messages you agree with as rigorously as you apply them to the messages you disagree with. Propaganda you oppose is easy to detect. Propaganda you support is nearly invisible. That asymmetry is the vulnerability this entire module has been leading toward.

Starting today, every time you encounter a claim that confirms something you already believe, treat it with the same scrutiny you would give to a claim from someone you distrust. Check the source. Verify the evidence. Ask who benefits. If you notice that you naturally scrutinize opposing claims more than supporting ones, you have identified your own myside bias. That awareness — not any amount of knowledge about propaganda techniques — is your most important defense.

A student who completes this module understands not just how propaganda works but why intelligence alone cannot protect against it. They recognize myside bias, motivated reasoning, and the sophistication effect in themselves, not just in others. They have a practical tool (the reverse-the-source test) for detecting asymmetric scrutiny in their own thinking. Most importantly, they carry the humility to know that their greatest vulnerability to propaganda lies not in ignorance but in overconfidence.

Humility

Humility in the face of propaganda means accepting that intelligence does not protect you. The belief that you are too smart to be manipulated is itself a vulnerability — it lowers your guard precisely when it should be highest. True humility recognizes that the human brain has predictable weaknesses that propaganda exploits, and that no amount of education makes you exempt from those weaknesses.

This lesson carries a paradoxical risk: a student might use the concept of myside bias to dismiss all criticism of their own position (“You’re just showing myside bias”) rather than engaging with the substance of the criticism. Understanding cognitive biases should make you more humble about your own reasoning, not more dismissive of others’. Additionally, the knowledge that smart people are vulnerable to propaganda could be used to justify targeting intelligent people with sophisticated propaganda — using their own analytical frameworks against them. The ethical commitment remains: these tools are for self-defense, not for predation.

This capstone delivers the most important message of Module 2: intelligence does not protect against propaganda. This may be challenging for academically oriented families to hear, because it undermines the comforting belief that education is a reliable shield against manipulation. It is not — not by itself. What protects against propaganda is the habit of self-scrutiny: turning critical tools inward as rigorously as outward. The Self-Examination exercise is the most valuable in the module, and doing it alongside your teenager — subjecting your own beliefs to the same analysis — models the intellectual humility the lesson teaches. If your teenager sees you genuinely questioning a belief you hold strongly, it will communicate more about intellectual honesty than any lecture could.
