How Algorithms Shape What You See
Every piece of information you encounter online has been selected for you by an algorithm. Not by an editor, not by a journalist, not by a librarian — by a mathematical function optimized for a single objective: keeping you engaged. The algorithm does not know or care whether the content is true, important, balanced, or good for you. It knows one thing: what you are likely to click on, watch, share, or respond to. And it gives you more of that. This means your information environment is not a neutral window onto the world. It is a mirror of your existing preferences, fears, and emotional triggers, curved and amplified to keep you looking. Understanding this is the foundation of media literacy in the twenty-first century, because you cannot evaluate information you do not understand has been pre-selected.
Building On
Module 1 studied how propagandists flood the information space with contradictory claims. Algorithms do not create the flood, but they determine which currents reach you. The firehose of falsehood becomes personally targeted when algorithms learn which falsehoods you are most likely to engage with and serve them to you preferentially.
The capstone of Module 1 asked whether speech makes things seem simpler or more complex. Algorithms systematically reward simplification: content that provokes immediate emotional reaction outperforms content that requires sustained thought. The complexity test fails at scale when the delivery system is optimized for engagement rather than understanding.
Why It Matters
You have grown up inside algorithmic curation, which means you have never experienced an unfiltered information environment. Every social media feed, every search result, every recommended video, every news aggregator you have ever used has been shaped by algorithms that select content based on your past behavior. This is not a conspiracy. It is a business model. Companies that sell advertising need your attention, and algorithms are the most efficient tool ever developed for capturing and holding attention.
The consequence is that your perception of reality is shaped by what the algorithm selects for you, and what the algorithm selects is not what is true or important but what is engaging. Engagement, in algorithmic terms, means the content that generates clicks, time-on-site, comments, and shares. Research consistently shows that the most engaging content is content that provokes strong emotions: outrage, fear, moral indignation, tribal identification, or amusement. Content that is nuanced, uncertain, or requires effort to understand generates less engagement and is therefore shown to fewer people.
This creates an information environment with a systematic bias toward emotional extremity and against nuance. You are not seeing a representative sample of the world. You are seeing the fraction of the world that makes you react. And because the algorithm personalizes this selection, different people see radically different versions of reality — not because they have chosen different perspectives, but because the algorithm has calculated which version of reality will keep each of them engaged the longest.
Understanding this is not optional for a citizen in the twenty-first century. If you do not understand how your information is selected, you cannot evaluate it. You are not a free thinker navigating an open information landscape. You are a consumer inside a system designed to keep you consuming. The first step toward genuine media literacy is seeing the system.
A Story
The Feed That Ate the World
Keiko was a careful news consumer. She followed reputable outlets. She read articles, not just headlines. She fact-checked claims that seemed suspicious. She considered herself well-informed.
For a class project, she and her lab partner Diego were asked to compare their social media feeds for one week. They used the same platforms but different accounts. At the end of the week, they compared screenshots.
The results were startling. Keiko’s feed was dominated by articles about climate policy, gender equity, and progressive economic proposals. Diego’s feed was dominated by articles about immigration, government overreach, and cultural commentary from conservative perspectives. Both feeds contained some content from the other’s dominant topics, but it was framed negatively: Keiko’s feed showed conservative positions as extreme; Diego’s feed showed progressive positions as extreme.
Neither Keiko nor Diego had deliberately sought this polarization. Neither had blocked opposing viewpoints. The algorithm had simply learned what each of them engaged with and given them more of it. Over time, each feed had become a self-reinforcing loop: engagement with one type of content produced more of that type, which produced more engagement, which produced more of the same.
Keiko said: “I thought I was choosing what to read. I didn’t realize something was choosing for me. And the scariest part is that my feed felt normal. It felt like the world. It took seeing Diego’s feed to realize I was seeing a version of the world, not the world.”
Diego added: “Same for me. My feed felt like reality. It’s only when I saw Keiko’s that I realized the algorithm had been building me a room with no windows. The room felt spacious because there was so much in it. But it was still a room.”
Their teacher, Mr. Nazari, said: “The algorithm doesn’t build the room to trap you. It builds the room because you stay longer in a room that feels comfortable. And the longer you stay, the more ads it can show you. You are not the user. You are the product. The advertiser is the user. The algorithm optimizes for the advertiser, not for you.”

- The automated selection and ranking of content based on a mathematical model of what a particular user is most likely to engage with. Algorithmic curation determines what you see in your social media feeds, search results, news aggregators, and video recommendations. It is the most powerful framing mechanism in history because it operates at scale, in real time, and without the user’s awareness.
- Engagement optimization
- The design principle underlying most algorithmic curation: content is selected and ranked based on its likelihood of generating user engagement (clicks, views, time-on-site, shares, comments). Because emotionally provocative content generates more engagement than nuanced content, engagement optimization creates a systematic bias toward emotional extremity and against complexity.
- Filter bubble
- The personalized information environment created by algorithmic curation, in which a user is increasingly exposed to content that confirms their existing views and preferences while being shielded from content that challenges them. The filter bubble is not a deliberate censorship mechanism. It is a byproduct of engagement optimization: people engage more with content that aligns with their existing beliefs.
- Attention economy
- The economic model in which human attention is the scarce resource being competed for. In the attention economy, companies profit by capturing and holding user attention, which they sell to advertisers. The algorithmic curation systems of social media platforms, search engines, and news aggregators are the infrastructure of the attention economy. Understanding that your attention is the product being sold is essential to understanding why your information environment looks the way it does.
Guided Teaching
Begin with the invisible frame. Module 1 studied how political leaders frame issues through speeches. This module studies a frame so pervasive that most people never notice it: the algorithm. Say: “Every speech we studied in Module 1 was delivered by a person who chose their words. The most powerful framing in your life is done by a machine that has no words, no intentions, and no conscience. It simply shows you what will keep you looking.”
Run the feed comparison. If possible, have two students with different political or cultural orientations compare their feeds in real time. If not, use Keiko and Diego’s experience as the case study. Ask: “Have you ever compared your social media feed to someone with different views? What did you notice? If you haven’t, why not?”
Explain the business model. The algorithm is not malicious. It is rational, given its objective. Its objective is engagement. Engagement generates ad revenue. Ad revenue is the business model. Draw the chain on the board: algorithm → engagement → attention → ad revenue. Then ask: “At what point in this chain does truth, accuracy, or your well-being enter the equation?” Answer: it doesn’t. Truth is irrelevant to the model unless falsehood happens to generate more engagement (which it often does).
Introduce the filter bubble. Keiko and Diego were not in different countries. They were in different informational realities, created by the same platform, based on different engagement patterns. Ask: “If two people cannot agree on basic facts, is the problem always that one of them is wrong? Or could the problem be that they are seeing different curated versions of reality?”
Connect to Module 1. The propaganda lesson warned about manufactured consensus and the firehose of falsehood. Algorithms do not create propaganda, but they amplify it — because propaganda is designed to be emotionally engaging, which is exactly what algorithms reward. Ask: “Does this mean algorithms are propaganda tools? Or are they neutral tools that propaganda exploits?”
Engage Mr. Nazari’s point. You are not the user. You are the product. Ask: “How does it change your relationship to social media to think of yourself as the product rather than the customer? What would the platform look like if it were optimized for your understanding rather than your engagement?”
End with the awareness principle. Awareness of the algorithm does not neutralize it. You are still inside the system. But awareness is the first step, because it allows you to ask: “Why am I seeing this?” rather than assuming what you see is representative of reality. “The algorithm is the most powerful editor you will ever encounter. It edits your reality every day. You cannot opt out. But you can know it’s happening.”
Pattern to Notice
Every time you open a social media app or search engine, ask: why am I seeing this particular content in this particular order? The answer is not “because it is important” or “because it is true.” The answer is “because the algorithm calculated that this content is most likely to keep me engaged.” Holding this awareness does not remove the algorithm’s influence, but it creates a critical distance between you and the content it serves you.

Awareness means understanding the forces that shape your perception before you can evaluate what you perceive. You cannot think critically about information if you do not understand how the information was selected and delivered to you. Algorithmic curation is the most powerful framing mechanism in human history, and most people experience it without knowing it exists. Awareness of the mechanism is the prerequisite for every other form of media literacy.
Misuse Warning
Understanding algorithmic curation can produce two dangerous responses. The first is paranoia: treating all information encountered online as manipulation, which leads to cynical dismissal of legitimate sources. The second is superiority: believing that awareness of the algorithm makes you immune to it, which is a form of overconfidence that the algorithm exploits as effectively as ignorance. Awareness is not immunity. It is vigilance — an ongoing practice of questioning your information environment, not a one-time insight that solves the problem.

The Algorithm Audit

- 2.After three days, analyze the thirty items. Categorize them by topic, political orientation, and emotional tone (outrage, fear, amusement, inspiration, etc.).
- 3.Write a 300-word report: What patterns do you see? What is the algorithm showing you? What topics or perspectives are absent? What does the emotional tone profile tell you about what the algorithm has learned about you?
- 4.In a final paragraph, describe one specific action you could take to diversify your information diet. Then do it, and report what changes in your feed over the following week.
